far islands and near places / Quentin Sirjacqによる作品解説

This music has several meanings for me.

I wanted to add new sounds to my piano playing. After the solo album Piano Memories, I felt the need to connect the piano with instruments and sounds that could extend the resonances of the piano as well as add a more rhythmic quality to it.

Firstly keyboards like fender rhodes, or synthesizers, clearly bring an electric quality. These instruments belong solely to a certain musical style and era (namely « amplified music » which began in the mid twentieth century,  from pop to electronic music).  Secondly, I wanted to add the sounds of percussion keyboards like marimba, vibraphone and glockenspiel. They bring a rhythmical aspect that helped to make the polyrhythmic patterns of my music come out – and also give an ancient sound quality. These are the first two elements of orchestration.

The third element is that of creative mixing. It was very important to me to blend the first two elements through a mixing style which is influenced by modern techniques of sound engineering. The entire album is based around the idea of emphasising piano sound through two specific vehicles: a modern aspect linked to technological devices and an old fashioned one based on piano and percussion which is not as contemporary. This describes the sonic quality of the music.

In more artistic terms I wanted to connect the very sensitive aspect of piano touch and feel and its narrative, with a contemporary way of rendering sound.  The final goal was to allow the listener to travel to different subconscious places, by using classical composition techniques from classical music, jazz or song-writing in conjunction with todays way of hearing and producing music through new technologies.  Ultimately I hope that this music will trigger several layers of interpretation relating to different periods of experience in our own lives, and to time travel between different ages in our individual and collective life stories.

I believe the music of today should allow us to care more about our inner life and self understanding in order to become more peaceful individuals and more able to acknowledge the complexity and mystery of the human condition.  It is important to make specific music for specific communities or specific moments in life but I have always been searching for a musical sound that would blend as many possible worlds into one entity – with the sincere desire to open our senses to the stories, environments and realities that we share.

far islands and near places / Quentin Sirjacq
